Trend: How To Wear 'Athleisure'!

by Lisa O'Shaughnessy in , , , , ,

First of all what Is Athleisure?

For the uninitiated, it's all about including sleek designed sportswear fashion (excluding all well worn saggy jogging bottoms) as part of your everyday look. Last year, the UK spent £4.5bn on activewear and according to research group Mintel, roughly half of those buying sportswear, had no intention of using them for actual sports. Activewear today isn’t being worn just to the gym, but on nights out, lunches with friends, the school run and depending on your line of work to the office.

Women and men of all ages around me in London and all over the country are wearing their sports clothing 24 7, whether it’s comfy but super stylish woven joggers with a maxi coat and hoody. Or channeling the athleisure trend poster girl ‘Gigi Hadid’, with mesh paneled leggings, a cropped tee and bomber jacket. The trick is to shop for sports gear thinking, ‘ how can I wear this in the gym and in everyday life?’

Here are my personal styling tips for incorporating sportswear style into your everyday wardrobe:

1. Trend

Until fairly recently the fitness industry did not have specific trends. It mainly used to be all about black, with a few strategic panels of bright colour, now it works very much hand in hand with current fashion. One being camouflage, which is really well showcased in Beyoncé’s brand ‘Ivy Park’, currently sold in Topshop. This cagoule style coat works just as well with active leggings and a bra top and alternatively with a cold shoulder blouse, distressed jeans and metallic ankle boots.

2. Mix function with fashion.

If you intend to wear both in and out of the gym, make sure you choose clothing made using performance fabrics, so it’s not see-through, is quick drying, and holds you in - eliminating the dreaded muffin top! Lulu Lemon has a great range of ‘Wunder Under’ leggings and shorts that not only look great but also support you in in all the right places.

3. Accessorize.

It only takes a couple of items to take sportswear style from the gym to the street or office. Adding a blazer and heels to side stripe jog pants creates a smart stylish look that can easily be worn to work. The key to nailing athleisure fashion is that your outfit has a sleek, modern sporty feel – no fuss or frills allowed.

4. Dressing appropriately.

Meeting friends for dinner after work wearing a sports bra and shorts and you risk being shown the door, for not being appropriately attired. Sweaty Betty’s Mukha Yoga Cami or Vidar Luxe dress, with Maje’s Galaxie coat thrown on over Zero Gravity leggings would though pass style muster.

5. When in doubt, start with neutrals.

If you feel like the atheleisure trend is a bit too much of a risk, start with adding a black or grey marl oversize hoody or paneled legging into your wardrobe. Then add into the mix monotone geometric prints, eventually moving into brighter colours and prints like Lulu Lemons Inspire print, as you gain confidence.

Adding in a couple of sportswear items into your wardrobe is an easy way to transform and update your current image. If you would like to know more and are interested in any of my personal styling services to show you how to shop and style athleisure fashion, please do get in touch.

Slip Into Autumn

Topshop £32

Though it may not seem like it at first sight, slip dresses are great versatile transitional piece.

Throw on a long duster coat or leather jacket over the top in September and balance out the heaviness of the top half with bare legs and sandals. In October add tights and boots, with a roll neck (worn underneath) and your new winter coat for a stylish layered up look.

New Denim Styles

Amazon Jean Shop

Amazon Fashion seems to be going from strength to strength. The ecommerce giant’s most recent exciting, not to mention convenient venture is a brand new Jeans Store.

With a whole host of the latest jean and denim trends, ranging from boyfriend, cropped, raw hems and kickflares, to the ever dependable skinny and straight-cut and there’s even an under £30 section! You can find something to suit every shape and budget. Other denim pieces include pussybow blouses, button up skirts, dungarees and dresses. Perfect for those of you who favour double denim, make sure to mix up lights and dark washes, rather than sticking to one tone all over.

Ballet Russes

Kurt Geiger £50

A new fashion trend for women hails from the school of the Nutcracker and Swan Lake. The ballet trend is gaining momentum with tulle skirts and dresses appearing in London and other British stores all over our high street.

Feel the whole look is too much for you? Why not just add these stylish and adorable strappy ballet inspired pumps from Kurt Geiger to your wardrobe. Wear with pleated skirts and wrap tops for a feminine feel, or pair with ripped jeans for an edgier look.

Embroidery

Zara: £39.99

River Island £35

This season denim and leather have been given a crafty makeover with cute patches and chic embroidery.

A favourite of mine are these beautiful ‘Gucci-esque’ and gorgeous rose embroidered jeans that add a ‘wow’ factor to any outfit. Wear with strappy sandals and a cami in the last days of summer and add ankle boots and statement sleeve blouse for the coming winter months.

Add embroidery into the mix for workwear, by pairing this skirt with a crisp white shirt and block-heeled Mary Janes.

Statement Sleeves

Victoria, by Victoria Beckham £195

This season it’s all about the arms, to flatter, expose, define and exaggerate with details and a play on proportions. This summers biggest clothing trend was the cold (exposed) shoulder, it was everywhere on dresses, tops and jackets. Update your winter wardrobe by adding frill detail shoulders on knits and blouses and add drama with a fluted or trumpet sleeve cuff.

Dress this amazing Victoria Beckham top up with a leather pencil skirt and skyscraper heels and for daytime or casual drinks, wear with cropped raw hem jeans and animal print or metallic ankle boots.
