The Top Autumn Trends for 2020

Wondering what to wear for the new season?

Normally at the start of September I compile the key autumnal trends for the season, which originate from February’s catwalk shows. This year though the fashion shows fell just before lockdown, when the world was a very different place. In 20 years predicting trends, (I am both a fashion designer and a personal stylist) trends have predominantly always come from the well-known designers with a bit of street style influence thrown in. This year however the balance has shifted to focus on how we are living today, looking at what people actually want or need to wear in the new normal, rather than being lead solely by designer trends.

Scroll down to see some of the top 5 trends emerging:

The Headscarf

2020’s key autumn winter accessory. I have to be honest it wasn’t on my radar as its always around and worn by many. But since Covid-19 its moved to front and centre stage. An item that can be worn so many ways. Around the neck, hair tie, bracelet, bag accessory and now face mask. The likes of Olivia Palermo, Sienna Miller and Sarah Jessica Parker have made the scarf mask the fashion accessory that literally all can wear!

The Blouse

2020 is the year of dressing from the waist up, as due to the rapid expansion of Zoom calls it’s the only element of your outfit you can see – the Zoom Blouse.  Wear with dark colour jogging or loungewear bottoms, so if you do have to stand up its not noticeable you are in your comfies!

The zoom blouse can fall into many categories depending on your industry and personal style. Pyrus is more smart casual, Never Fully Dressed casual and creative and Cefinn formal.

Collars

Following on from dressing from the waist up comes oversize and detailed collars. If you don’t want to invest in this trend, cheat! Buy a collar accessory - there are many styles on websites like Etsy and Ebay to choose from.  Pop over a favourite jumper or dress for an instant new outfit.

Elevated Knitwear

Knitwear encompasses many styles of clothing and not just the ubiquitous jumper. Styles this season range from the knitted lounge pant, the tube dress, jewelled button cardigans, to the preserve of nerds the tank top!  The Prada one below would look great over a white or navy shirt.

Well designed, fitted and comfortable styles are key, with baggy and sloppy being a definite no. Look for vintage or preloved cashmere styles online if wanting quality but on a tight budget.

Quilted Coats

If you are not due back to the office full time until 2021 undoubtably your lifestyle will have changed and so you may have less of a need for new smart winter coat. Instead a more versatile, comfortable (comfort is key) stylish coat that can take you from the supermarket shop, to a lunch time dog walk, to an evening out could be a far better option. Cue the quilted coat or jacket, more refined than its cousin the puffa but equally as cosy.
