With Added Sock Styling Guidance!
As a men’s personal stylist based in London, when i’m out personal shopping with clients, one of the most common questions I’m asked is: ‘which shoes go with which trouser?’ Generally followed by, ‘what kind of socks should I wear?’
With menswear the devil really is in the detail. A mismatched combination can throw off the entire balance of an outfit. When it comes to sock choices in summer I often recommend an invisible sock. For those not au fait with them, they’re socks that sit hidden inside the shoe, offering comfort and hygiene without disrupting the overall look and alleviating blisters.
So, if you are ready to elevate your footwear game, keep scrolling for some inspiration to get you started.
style With Chinos
What shoes or trainers to wear with chinos depends on the occasion and setting. For smart-casual environments, opt for dressier styles such as loafers, Oxfords, or Monk strap shoes. Pair them with complimentary sock colours like navy and grey, or earthy tones with lighter colour chinos.
In colder months, chukka and Chelsea boots are a stylish and practical choice.
For casual outings, go for footwear that matches the relaxed vibe. Think classic style trainers, boat shoes, canvas slip-ons, or Birkenstocks. Invisible socks are ideal for a clean, modern look.
Instead of a bright white trainer, tone it down with and ecru and white mix.
style with shorts
If you are wearing a sporty look with trainers, then it’s absolutely ok to have your socks on show - if that is your personal style. Also consider Birkenstock sandals and Boston mules or sliders for a sporty laid back look. Avoid socks and sandals if you are over 25 and under 75!
For smarter short looks I would advise invisible or no socks with an array of shoes from canvas slip ons, espadrilles, smarter trainers, boat or driving shoes to leather sandals. Leave flip flops for the beach.
Smart but casual choices.
style With Jeans
Jeans cover such a wide range of looks, so I’ve broken this down into sections.
Smart Casual
Choose sleek shoe options like Derby styles or leather loafers in black, brown or tan. These colours work particularly well with dark to mid-wash jeans and create a polished put together outfit.
Boots
Chelsea boots depending on the style work for both casual and smart casual settings. Chukka and desert boots are perfect for casual days, while chunkier hiking styles work well with a relaxed oversized silhouette.
Casual
Choose from sporty to classic trainers - where any sock will work - to suede loafers, boat shoes, or driving shoes. Paired with either invisible socks or contrast-coloured ones on colder days. It all depends on your personal style.
Pair the suede loafers with invisible or no socks.
Tailored Trousers
Since the rise of business and smart casual dressing shoe choices and colours (‘no brown in town’, is plain daft) have expanded. For a sharp polished look opt for an oxblood Oxford or a tan Monk strap. If wanting to pair with a trainer, stark white may not be the best colour, try a black, grey, navy or brown shade instead.
If your trousers have some texture - for example a check wool flannel - they may call for more substantial footwear. Think brogues and Derby shoes to Chelsea and Chukka boots.
A good guideline is to choose socks that are the same colour as, or a few shades darker than your trousers to create a polished look. If wanting to add in some personality choose an argyle or stripe, never a cartoon character!
Choose black trainers and shoes that are anything but black for a sharp look.
The right shoes and socks can make or break a look. Choose wisely, and you will always put your best stylish foot forward!
