Transitional Jackets For The Season
Autumn, after what feels like a very hot summer, has finally arrived. As a personal stylist based in London, one of the questions I’m asked most often is what to wear to stay cool, warm and dry when the weather can change so dramatically. It can feel freezing when you leave the house in the morning, like the Mediterranean by lunchtime, and then pour with rain just in time for dinner.
Now that the thermometer is dipping into the mid teens, it raises the all-important question: what do you wear in 15/16 degree weather? Fifteen degrees, incidentally, isn’t nearly as cold as it sounds. The secret to surviving our unpredictable climate lies having a few - yes more than 1 - transitional jackets in your wardrobe, and of course, an umbrella to hand.

The Funnel Neck
The funnel neck jacket, also known as the windbreaker or technical jacket, is a surprisingly versatile style. It can be dressed up or down and comes in leather, suede, cotton, and technical fabrics, making it a style to suit everyone.
The Trench
The trench coat is a hardy perennial, now available as both a coat and a jacket. Not everyone suits the classic beige, but there are plenty of other neutral shades to choose from. And if you’re unsure which colours suit you best, colour analysis can provide the answer
The suede jacket
The beauty of a suede jacket is that it is the ultimate transeasonal piece. Effortlessly thrown over a dress, it adds a textured layer that compliments autumn staples you already own - think knits with trousers, or skirts paired with shirts. Best of all, a true suede jacket only improves with age!
The barn jacket
If you picked up a barn jacket last autumn you’ll be glad to know this countryside inspired design isn’t going anywhere and won’t be for a few years. With its mix of practicality and old money vibe, it’s ideal for autumn showers and chilly early mornings
There are, of course, many other jacket and light coat styles out there. The main takeaway is that with our 'four seasons in one day' unpredictable weather, having a couple of versatile jackets or outerwear pieces is key. Too often, jackets are an afterthought in autumn, when they really it should be one of the main drivers of your wardrobe, alongside a winter coat.
