A Guide On How To Shop For Menswear Online

Online Styling For Men

As we are currently in a Corona virus lockdown, buying something new to wear is only achievable online – unless you want to start buying all your clothes from supermarkets! Buying clothes online does come with pitfalls but as a fashion designer and personal stylist for men I share below my style tips to ensure you don’t have to return everything.

Measure yourself

Measure your height, waist, inside leg, chest, sleeve length and neck size and store your measurements somewhere handy like your laptop or phone. The waist can often be the trickiest part to measure, you can find the correct spot by placing your hands around your waist, squeezing slightly, and then moving your fingers downward until you feel the top curve of your hips. Place a tape measure around your bare stomach just above the upper hip bone. If you are carrying weight and prefer your waist to sit lower, I would measure on your hips.

Measure your own clothes

Although seemingly simple not everyone measures themselves accurately. If you fear you may fall into this camp, then I would suggest as a fail-safe measuring your own clothes.

Lay a favourite jumper or shirt flat and measure it at the following points.  Across the chest 2cm down from where the underarm finishes. The cross shoulder – shoulder edge to edge straight across the, the centre back - base of the collar to the hem and the sleeve length – shoulder seam to cuff edge.

Find Your Size

Before you add to bag, locate the store’s size guide and compare with either your garment or body measurements to ascertain the best size. Unfortunately, small, medium and large does not mean the same in every retailer or brand. Stores like Zara and Mr Porter have very comprehensive size guide for you to check against.

Look at the model

Check the height, build and how its outfitted on the model in the photo to judge how the same garment will look on you. A Harrington jacket on a rail looks like just a jacket, add in a six-foot model and team it with a pair of tailored trousers and a knitted polo shirt, and it becomes something very different. For example, if you have a broad chest it will appear more fitted.   For ease if you are unsure what to wear with your purchase it’s sometimes worth buying the whole look.

Brands

As an added extra I can advise brands that are behaving responsibly towards their suppliers and workforce. With one foot in manufacturing and the other in styling I source up to the minute information from my global contacts.
